5 Parental Questions
The 5 Questions I used to help my children interpret moments of life. The order actually IS important especially if you stay consistent.
1. What was going on? What did you do?
>Don’t worry about bias. You can’t recount a memory without it. Simply getting a grip of the situation.
2. What were you thinking/feeling as it happened?
> Trying to get to the heart of the matter. Remember they are always worshipping and interpreting based on what they worship.
3. What did you do in response?
> We move from heart or motivation to behavior and words as a reaction to their heart.
4. Why did you do it? What were you seeking to accomplish?
> Here you are trying to get to motivation/goal/purpose. We are bracketing behavior with thoughts/feelings and motives.
5. What was the result?
> Here the question goes after consequences.
These questions provided the backbone and structure for so many of our most transformational conversations. My hope is that as you practice they will be helpful for you as well.
There! Promise fulfilled!
